Overall Observations
Ford’s Maverick, a compact crew-cab pickup introduced in 2022, has been wildly popular from the get-go. It’s a no-nonsense, practical truck with an affordable base price.
The Maverick has a number of things going for it: an optional hybrid powertrain EPA-rated at 37 mpg; a reasonably roomy cabin with good legroom up front and good headroom all round; and lots of interior storage in the doors, center console, and under the back seats.
Unfortunately, there are a few noteworthy downsides. For instance, the base XL trim’s starting price is about $27,000. But to get popular features such as push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, or a power driver’s seat, you have to spring for the Lariat trim. That adds nearly 9 grand to the bottom line.
Ditto for standard advanced safety features: The two lowest trims get only automatic emergency braking. Additional safety features are available via the optional Co-Pilot360 package ($650) or, again, by stepping up to the Lariat.
Although the Maverick’s controls are simple and easy to use, its tech feels behind the times. For example, the touch screen is small; the instruments are analog, not digital; and there are no rear-seat HVAC vents. The interior also feels low-rent, with lots of hard plastic on the dash, center console, and door panels. Finally, the flat back-seat cushions are uncomfortable.
