Overall Observations
The Elantra Hybrid gives the lie to the notion that entry-level cars have to be underpowered, uninspired econoboxes. It delivers high value—excellent fuel economy (50 mpg) and lots of standard features in a boldly styled package priced at just under $31,000 for our Limited-trim test car.
The top-tier Limited trim offers plenty of standard convenience and safety features, including a sunroof, synthetic leather seating, Bose premium audio system, power driver’s seat with memory settings, a surround-view camera system, and a full suite of ADAS features. A nice bonus: Hyundai includes 3 years/36,000 miles of free routine maintenance.
The Elantra Hybrid is an easy car to drive, with a smooth, well-controlled ride, stable suspension, and nicely weighted steering. The cabin provides plenty of legroom and headroom for all passengers; the trunk, at 14.2 cubic-feet, is nicely sized. The Elantra Hybrid is equipped with a digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch touch screen, and the controls, knobs, and switches are within easy reach of the driver.
There are a few negatives to deal with, though they’re not likely to be sticking points. The Elantra Hybrid’s drivetrain is underpowered (139 hp) and noisy when pushed hard. Rear visibility is compromised by a high rear deck, and the cabin materials could stand some improvement (too much hard plastic, too few soft-touch surfaces).
