Overall Observations
Hyundai redesigned the midsize Santa Fe SUV outside and in for 2024—and boy, did they ever! It’s no exaggeration to say that the bold, boxy 2024 version bears virtually no resemblance to the curved contours of the 2023 Santa Fe.
But the changes don’t stop with the new sheet metal. Third-row seating is now standard, as is the previously optional turbocharged engine (the hybrid has a different engine), and the dash has a new, panoramic display.
The Santa Fe’s strengths start with its usability. It’s easy to drive and comfortable to ride in, with supportive seats and plenty of legroom and headroom for all first- and second-row passengers. Visibility is good all around, thanks to the large rear windows.
The Santa Fe also qualifies as a good value. We tested the top-trim Calligraphy edition, but even the base SE version (starting price: $34,200) comes with LED headlights, a power liftgate, heated side mirrors, a 12.3-inch infotainment touch screen, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration, and much more. Hyundai offers a generous suite of advanced safety features, including Highway Driving Assist on the top 3 trim levels.
Alas, the Santa Fe’s not perfect. Third-row seating is tight, the engine suffers from turbo lag, and the second-row captain’s chairs (available only on the Calligraphy trim) are complicated to operate.
