Overall Observations
Traditionally one of the best-selling midsize sedans, the Hyundai Sonata received a significant refresh for 2024. It comes in a choice of 4 trims, including 2 with hybrid powertrains. We tested the top-tier Limited Hybrid.
The Limited Hybrid is powered by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine and an electric motor, good for 190 hp. Fuel efficiency is stellar, an EPA-estimated 47 mpg in combined city-highway driving. The Sonata also delivers a controlled, comfortable ride, an important quality in this vehicle segment.
The Sonata’s exterior design is bolder and more daring than the previous edition’s, though some find it a bit polarizing. The cabin is roomy, with plenty of headroom and legroom for all passengers, and the interior materials and build quality have been updated.
Overall value is another of the Sonata’s strong suits—an abundance of desirable standard features at a lower cost than the competition. For example, the base SEL model comes with remote keyless entry, push-button start, heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, a combined digital instrument cluster and 12.3-inch infotainment touch screen, wireless smartphone integration, and more. And standard on all Sonatas is a raft of advanced safety and driver-assistance features.
The Sonata has just a few shortcomings: Wide rear roof pillars limit rear and side visibility, and getting in and out of the back seat can be cumbersome.
