Introduction:

To help members understand the latest automotive technology so they can purchase vehicles that best suit their needs, the Automobile Club of Southern California's Automotive Research Center (ARC) began testing and reviewing vehicles over a decade ago

For the 2025 edition, we include testing and ranking cars and light trucks with the latest technology, including having at least one advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) feature. In addition to vehicle evaluation, the guide covers a number of pertinent automotive topics in detail—for example, the latest advanced safety features, how to properly maintain your vehicle, and new vehicles coming to market in the next few years.

Overall Observations

The Tucson small SUV is Hyundai’s best-selling vehicle; a hybrid (see page TK) and plug-in hybrid versions arrived in 2022, when the Tucson was last redesigned. The PHEV version is available in 2 trim levels; we tested the top-of-the-line Limited trim. The Tucson PHEV is powered by a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and an electric motor (261 hp), which provide robust acceleration, although the engine is noisy under hard acceleration and the transmission’s shifts can feel hesitant and delayed. Nonetheless, the Tucson offers both agile handling and a good ride quality in daily driving Its all-EV range is a competitive 33 miles—plenty for most people’s daily commutes. The Tucson has a spacious cabin and provides plenty of standard equipment even on its base SEL trim: dual-zone automatic climate control with rear vents, a hands-free liftgate, heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and a full set of advanced safety features. A low dashboard design ensures excellent front visibility. There are some drawbacks worth noting, however. For instance, the infotainment system’s touch-based controls can be distracting, and rear and side visibility are compromised by second-row headrests and thick rear roof pillars. Finally, although the Tucson’s fuel efficiency is decent (35 mpg in hybrid mode), it lags behind some competitors.
