Overall Observations
The Niro EV, introduced in 2019 and completely redesigned for 2023, has a number of qualities to recommend it—it’s a lot of car for a base MSRP of about $41,000. We tested the top-trim Wave model.
On the positive side, the Niro EV has an expansive interior and abundant cargo space, including a frunk to store small items. It’s also highly fuel efficient, with an excellent EPA rating of 113 MPGe in combined city/highway driving, and it comes equipped with a host of standard advanced safety features.
Other standard convenience features include a 10.25-inch panoramic display screen, a power liftgate, and heated front seats. On the tech side, the Niro EV has 4 levels of braking regeneration and a DC charging capability of 100 miles of recharge in 30 minutes.
But although its single electric motor delivers 201 hp, the Niro EV feels slow off the line, and it’s 253 miles of range is low compared to its competition. And the Niro EV is no driver’s car: Its ride and handling are unremarkable, and the steering feel is both unengaging and unrefined.
In addition, operating the infotainment and climate controls is distracting, requiring toggling between the two systems with the same controls. Finally, its wide rear roof pillars create blind spots to the rear and the sides.
