Overall Observations
One of Lexus’ best-selling vehicles, the compact NX slots in between the automaker’s subcompact UX and midsize RX crossovers. It’s available in gas-only, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid powertrains. We tested the 450h+ plug-in hybrid with the F Sport Handling package, which comprises, among other features, sport seats, adaptive variable suspension, a unique grille, black 20-inch wheels, and a 14-inch infotainment touch-screen display.
The NX 450h+ is a good-looking vehicle, with contemporary styling inside and out. A 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine and dual electric motors (304 hp total) deliver plenty of power, and an 18.1-kW battery provides a useful 37 miles of all-electric range. AWD is standard.
The NX’s stylish, spacious cabin offers plenty of room for passengers in both rows; fit, finish, and materials quality are excellent. The F Sport package’s adaptive variable suspension offers a smooth, controlled ride, and the heated and ventilated front and rear seats on our test car provided added comfort. The Lexus Safety System+ 3.0, with advanced features like curve-speed management, which enables a car to maintain a constant speed through corners, is standard.
Negatives for the NX include a lack of steering feedback and confusing, unmarked steering-wheel touchpads. Additionally, rear and side visibility is compromised by tall back-seat headrests and wide rear roof pillars.
