Introduction:

To help members understand the latest automotive technology so they can purchase vehicles that best suit their needs, the Automobile Club of Southern California's Automotive Research Center (ARC) began testing and reviewing vehicles over a decade ago

For the 2025 edition, we include testing and ranking cars and light trucks with the latest technology, including having at least one advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) feature. In addition to vehicle evaluation, the guide covers a number of pertinent automotive topics in detail—for example, the latest advanced safety features, how to properly maintain your vehicle, and new vehicles coming to market in the next few years.

Overall Observations

The Lexus TX 500h is a 3-row crossover SUV based on Toyota’s Grand Highlander. New to the Lexus lineup in 2024, the sharp-looking midsize TX is available in 3 versions: our hybrid test vehicle (in top-shelf Luxury trim), a gasoline-only variant, and a plug-in hybrid version. The TX 500h boasts several noteworthy strengths. The hybrid drivetrain delivers impressive power (366 hp) and decent fuel economy (27 mpg in combined city/highway driving) for a vehicle its size. AWD is standard on the hybrid edition. The TX has plenty of room for passengers (including a third row that’s usable by adults), lots of cargo space, and it delivers a comfortable ride. Clear instrumentation, a 14-inch infotainment touch screen, and a suite of standard advanced safety features further enhance the TX 500h’s appeal. Luxurious convenience features include heated and ventilated front and rear seats, a Mark Levinson premium audio system, a panoramic glass roof, and thematic ambient illumination. The TX has a few drawbacks, however. The steering-wheel controls are nonintuitive and complicated, making them difficult to use and potentially distracting. The infotainment system also lacks an intuitive interface; most climate controls are accessed via the touch screen rather than by buttons and knobs. Finally, although the TX is attractive, with excellent overall fit and finish, it doesn’t exude quite the sense of luxury it should given its $77,000 price tag.
