Introduction:

To help members understand the latest automotive technology so they can purchase vehicles that best suit their needs, the Automobile Club of Southern California's Automotive Research Center (ARC) began testing and reviewing vehicles over a decade ago

For the 2025 edition, we include testing and ranking cars and light trucks with the latest technology, including having at least one advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) feature. In addition to vehicle evaluation, the guide covers a number of pertinent automotive topics in detail—for example, the latest advanced safety features, how to properly maintain your vehicle, and new vehicles coming to market in the next few years.

Overall Observations

In 2024, Lincoln launched the second generation of its Nautilus midsize luxury crossover with a total redesign. The new Nautilus is sleeker and a bit larger, with upgraded interior materials and some eye-catching tech. Available in 3 trim levels, the Nautilus comes with either a gasoline-powered or hybrid drivetrain. We tested the hybrid version in the top-tier Black Label trim. Our handsome test vehicle had a striking metallic-white paint job and a black roof, sculpted fenders with integrated headlights, and 22-inch wheels. The tranquil interior is spacious and luxurious, with upscale materials, supportive leather seating, and plenty of legroom and headroom for all passengers. A 48-inch panoramic screen dominates the dash, controlled by an 11.1-inch touch screen positioned above the center console. The Nautilus’ hybrid drivetrain, a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine and 2 electric motors (310 hp), provides quick acceleration and plenty of power, and the adaptive suspension delivers a smooth, comfortable ride. AWD is standard, as is a full complement of advanced safety features, including Ford’s BlueCruise driver-assistance feature. Criticisms of the Nautilus Hybrid include the fact that adjustments to most controls must be routed through the touch screen, a potential distraction. Second, the brake pedal lacked the firm pressure needed to stop the Nautilus with confidence. And finally, the Black Label trim seems a bit pricey (about $23,000 more than the base Premiere trim) for value received.
