Overall Observations
The Air, a large sedan from EV startup Lucid Motors, finally arrived in 2022 after years on enthusiast publications’ Future Cars lists. We tested the entry-level Pure trim, if that term can be applied to a $77,000 car.
The Pure trim is equipped with a single motor (430 hp, RWD) and an 88-kWh battery pack, good for an impressive EPA-estimated range of up to 410 miles, among the industry’s longest. Other noteworthy stats: a manufacturer-claimed 0-to-60 time of 4.5 seconds, a fuel-efficiency rating of 130 MPGe, and up to 200 miles of charging in 17 minutes.
Imposing performance numbers are only part of the story, of course. The Pure’s ride is impressively smooth, and there’s plenty of room for all passengers to stretch out in its attractive, spacious cabin. Cargo and storage space are good, as well: a 26.1-cubic foot rear trunk, 9.9-cubic foot front trunk (frunk), and deep door pockets and center console.
A few negatives mar the picture slightly. Much of the infotainment and HVAC systems are controlled by the tablet-like Pilot Panel touch display, which is complicated and distracting to use while driving. The clothlike material on the front door panels and dash feels cheap for a luxury car. Finally, the sloping roofline and back-seat headrests compromise rear visibility and make getting in and out of the car a bit awkward.
