Overall Observations
In 2024, Mazda introduced the CX-90, its midsize 3-row flagship SUV, which replaces the CX-9. It’s available as a plug-in hybrid (reviewed here) and in a gasoline-only version (see page TK).
The CX-90 is a handsome vehicle—bold and sleek. The interior, typically Mazda, is decidedly upscale, with elegant, near-luxury design elements.
The CX-90 PHEV is powered by a 2.5-liter 6-cylinder engine and an electric motor, good for 323 hp total. That’s 17 fewer horses than the CX-90 Turbo, but the PHEV doesn’t lack for power. Its estimated all-electric driving range is 26 miles; total range is pegged at 480 miles. All-wheel drive is standard.
Driving enjoyment for the CX-90 PHEV is high; it delivers both sharp, agile handling and a comfortable ride. Fuel efficiency, though, is a bit disappointing: 56 MPGe and 25 mpg in combined city/highway driving.
Other desirable features on our CX-90 test vehicle included tri-zone automatic climate control, heated front and rear seats, good first- and second-row headroom and legroom, and LED headlights with good brightness and coverage. A full complement of advanced safety features is standard.
Regrettably, the CX-90’s infotainment system’s graphics look dated, and the touch screen functions only when using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Rear and side visibility are somewhat restricted, and the shifter pattern is odd, requiring both side-to-side and forward-backward movements.
