Introduction:

To help members understand the latest automotive technology so they can purchase vehicles that best suit their needs, the Automobile Club of Southern California's Automotive Research Center (ARC) began testing and reviewing vehicles over a decade ago

For the 2025 edition, we include testing and ranking cars and light trucks with the latest technology, including having at least one advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) feature. In addition to vehicle evaluation, the guide covers a number of pertinent automotive topics in detail—for example, the latest advanced safety features, how to properly maintain your vehicle, and new vehicles coming to market in the next few years.

Overall Observations

An EV pioneer, Nissan introduced the small Leaf EV in 2011 and redesigned it in 2018. But not until 2023 did the automaker release a second EV, the Ariya (pronounced ah-ree-ah), a larger, more upscale compact SUV. It’s available in 7 trim levels; we tested the top-of-the line Platinum+ trim. The Ariya offers prospective buyers a choice of drivetrains and battery sizes. Upper trim levels utilize more powerful motors and a larger battery pack—twin motors producing 389 hp and an 87.0-kWh battery pack in the case of our test car. That’s good for a fuel-efficiency rating of 90 MPGe and a range of 267 miles. The Ariya’s dual-motor setup provides plenty of pickup and overall power, although its ride and handling qualities didn’t inspire either positive or negative comments from our testing staff. The cabin is roomy, modern, and attractive, with enough headroom and legroom for all passengers. In addition to a full set of advanced safety features (Nissan Safety Shield 360), our test car came standard with ProPilot Assist 2.0, Nissan’s limited hands-free driving-assistance feature. Drawbacks for the Ariya include a relatively slow (130-kW) fast-charging speed, a merely average electric range, and a distracting infotainment system with dated graphics and slow response times. Finally, rear visibility is compromised by large roof supports and rear headrests.
