Overall Observations
After a long wait—since 2008—Toyota launched the third generation of its big, truck-based SUV, the Sequoia in 2023. Perhaps the most significant change is that the automaker deep-sixed its gas-guzzling V8 (14-15 mpg) in favor of a twin-turbocharged 6-cylinder-based hybrid drivetrain (20-22 mpg) coupled with 10-speed transmission—a big improvement, though fuel economy is still isn’t exactly stellar. Fortunately, only regular-grade gas is required.
Like its namesake, the Sequoia is massive, with rugged exterior styling—and it has a lot going for it if you need a 3-row vehicle. Its 437 horsepower delivers ample, usable power and has a decent steering feel for everyday driving. There’s enough room for passengers and cargo and plenty of storage cubbies; the interior is sensibly laid out (albeit with the use of some cheap materials); and the infotainment system is both improved and fairly intuitive to operate. Our Limited trim test vehicle included heated and ventilated front seats, tri-zone automatic climate control, and a trailer-brake controller.
But on the whole, the Sequoia’s ride quality comes up short—it feels uncontrolled, with lots of body roll, and the big SUV rocks back and forth when it comes to a stop. The view to the side and rear is limited by the wide third roof pillars and back-seat head restraints. And third-row seating could be more comfortable.
