Overall Observations
The bZ4X compact crossover, Toyota’s first (and only) mass-produced EV, was introduced in 2023 and is related to the Subaru Solterra, with which it shares a platform and numerous components. It’s available in a single- or dual-motor setup (FWD or AWD) in 2 trim levels.
The bZ4X gets a number of EV basics right: Both the drivetrain and ride are smooth, and our test vehicle’s single electric motor provided good low-end acceleration and sufficient power. Fuel efficiency—112 MPGe—is excellent. Likewise, the cabin is capacious, with plenty of headroom and legroom for all passengers.
Standard advanced safety features are plentiful, courtesy of Toyota’s Safety Sense 3.0 system. Additional safety and convenience features on our test vehicle included front and rear parking sensors, a surround-view camera system, heated and ventilated front seats, and upgraded LED headlights.
The bZ4X’s biggest negatives are—especially for an EV with its price tag—its limited range (236 miles for the Limited trim) and the distinctly non-premium feel of its cabin (a cloth-like covering on the dash and copious black plastic parts, for example).
Other dings include limited side and rear visibility due to wide roof pillars, a long Level 2 charge time (about 11 hours), an odd, high-mounted instrument cluster design, and a steering wheel design that blocks the view of the instruments and gauges.
