Overall Observations
Volvo’s first EV, the stylish XC40 Recharge, was introduced in 2021 and is based on the gasoline-powered XC40. We tested the single-motor top-trim Ultimate version (RWD). Its 248 hp provides quick acceleration and plenty of smooth, sustained power.
The XC40 is a good daily driver, with a comfortable but firm ride and handling that qualifies as sporty—although the steering could use a bit more feedback. Drivetrain efficiency is high (106 MPGe in combined driving) and the EV range (293 miles) is commendable. Volvo claims a DC charge time of 28 minutes to take the battery from 10 to 80% capacity. Exterior fit and finish are excellent. As an added bonus, Volvo provides complimentary scheduled maintenance for 4 years/40,000 miles.
The XC40’s interior has plenty of headroom all around and good legroom for front passengers. Sophisticated advanced safety features abound, such as rear cross-traffic alert with autobrake and power rear head restraints. Regenerative braking enables convenient 1-pedal driving. However, back-seat entry and exit are tight because of the low rear seat.
Other negatives for the XC40 include a nonintuitive infotainment system that lacks knobs and hard buttons, and front seats that are heated but not ventilated. The interior design is minimalist and bland, with cloth upholstery that doesn’t befit a luxury vehicle. Finally, visibility to the rear is restricted by wide roof pillars.
