Introduction:

To help members understand the latest automotive technology so they can purchase vehicles that best suit their needs, the Automobile Club of Southern California's Automotive Research Center (ARC) began testing and reviewing vehicles over a decade ago

For the 2025 edition, we include testing and ranking cars and light trucks with the latest technology, including having at least one advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) feature. In addition to vehicle evaluation, the guide covers a number of pertinent automotive topics in detail—for example, the latest advanced safety features, how to properly maintain your vehicle, and new vehicles coming to market in the next few years.

Overall Observations

The Alfa Romeo Tonale is a small luxury SUV that shares a platform, powertrain, and numerous components with its Stellantis sibling, the Dodge Hornet (see page TK). The Tonale is available with a plug-in hybrid powertrain and, new for 2025, a gasoline-powered drivetrain. We tested the PHEV version in the upscale Tributo Italiano trim, which adds a unique grille, paddle shifters, a dual-mode adaptive suspension, and red Brembo brake calipers, among other features. Our test vehicle was equipped with a 1.3-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and electric motor (285 hp); its all-electric driving range is 33 miles. The Tonale’s powertrain provides quick acceleration and robust power, and the paddle shifters enhance the driving experience. The steering is precise but lacks feedback; the 6-speed automatic is smooth and responsive; and the adjustable suspension delivers a stable, comfortable ride. The cabin’s fit, finish, and materials quality befit a luxury vehicle. Controls are sensibly laid out and within easy reach, and the HVAC system has easy-to-adjust tabs and knobs. The Tonale comes standard with a full suite of ADAS features. Downsides include restricted rear and side visibility, and a drivetrain that was noisy and vibrated under hard acceleration. The Tonale’s sloping roofline made entry and exit from the back seat challenging, and the infotainment system exhibited some delays moving between functions.
