Introduction:

To help members understand the latest automotive technology so they can purchase vehicles that best suit their needs, the Automobile Club of Southern California's Automotive Research Center (ARC) began testing and reviewing vehicles over a decade ago

For the 2025 edition, we include testing and ranking cars and light trucks with the latest technology, including having at least one advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) feature. In addition to vehicle evaluation, the guide covers a number of pertinent automotive topics in detail—for example, the latest advanced safety features, how to properly maintain your vehicle, and new vehicles coming to market in the next few years.

Overall Observations

The UX 300h is Lexus’ smallest, entry-level SUV. It’s been around since 2019, and it’s evolved slowly, gaining a few improvements each year. But for 2025, it’s received arguably its most needed update: a more powerful hybrid powertrain (from 181 to 196 hp). The UX’s makes for a good daily driver—its power delivery is smooth, and its adaptive variable suspension and AWD serve up mildly sporty handling. Fuel economy jumps for 2025, too, from 39 to 42 mpg in combined city/highway driving for the AWD model. The UX 300h’s exterior design mimics that of its NX and RX relatives—bold lines and sharp angles. Its attractive, sensibly laid-out interior makes good use of high-quality faux leather and textured, soft-touch materials. The UX is equipped with Lexus’ excellent Safety System+ 3.0 suite of ADAS features. Additional upscale convenience features on our top-tier F Sport Handling test vehicle included a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration, heated and ventilated front seats, and a power moonroof and tailgate. The UX has just a few shortcomings worth mentioning. Its back seat is really cramped, and getting in and out is a chore. Second, side visibility is limited by wide roof supports and a small back window. Finally, cargo space behind the rear seats is sorely lacking.
