Overall Observations
If you saw a Mazda CX-70 midsize SUV on the street and thought you’d seen a CX-90, you could be forgiven. That’s because except for the CX-90’s third-row seating, they’re essentially the same vehicle. New for 2025, the CX-70 is available in 2 gas-powered versions and a plug-in hybrid.
We tested the more powerful 3.3 Turbo S in the midlevel Premium trim. Its 3.3-liter turbo 6-cylinder engine (340 hp) provided good pickup and abundant power, and the taut suspension delivered responsive handling and a comfortable ride. AWD is standard for all versions. The headlights—LEDs with auto high beam—also deserve a shout out for their brightness and effective illumination pattern.
The CX-70’s interior is typical Mazda—elegantly designed, with classy, upscale materials. It wouldn’t look out of place in an entry-level luxury vehicle. The spacious cabin provides plenty of legroom and headroom for all passengers; entry and exit are easy. Finally, the CX-70 is loaded with advanced safety features.
Negatives are few but not insignificant. Transmission upshifts felt rough and sluggish. The infotainment system is nonintuitive, its graphics look dated, and the touch screen only works when you’re using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto smartphone integration. Finally, the staff was split on the exterior design: thumbs up for the bold, stylin’ front, thumbs down for the blunt, boxy rear.
