Eastern Canada Road Trips

Enter the preserved lands of the Whiteshell Provincial Park on Provincial Trunk Highway 44 (PR 44), just south of Rennie, and enjoy the scenery as the two-lane highway winds east and south toward West Hawk Lake. The park features nearly 2,800 kilometers of boreal forest with numerous lakes and rivers.

The sun shines off the gentle blue waters like polished chrome and Terra Nova National Park is full of lush green forest in this section of Trans-Canada 1 Highway in eastern Newfoundland. Vistas of Trinity Bay and the dense trees atop rolling hills wrap around the route with picturesque beauty.

Skirting the western edge of the world's largest freshwater lake, the Lake Superior Scenic Circle Tour (PR 61) from Thunder Bay, Ont., to Minnesota is marked by views of rolling hills, semi-wooded farmland and the rounded, forested peaks of the Nor'Wester range. Don't expect to see Lake Superior from the highway, though, as this portion of the byway runs inland.

Trans-Canada Highway 1 in Prince Edward Island inspires an unhurried pace and a leisurely exploration of sapphire water along the coastline as well as rolling countryside and shady forested parks. Extensive farmland unfurls between the shore and dense wooded parks along the route.

The magnificent physical beauty of Western Newfoundland is marked by the Long Range Mountains (an extension of the Appalachian chain) and by the Gulf of St. Lawrence and its migrating icebergs. The byway along PR 430 encapsulates this beauty within the bounds of Gros Morne National Park.

An autumn trip along the Frontenac Provincial Park Scenic Drive (PR 10) harvests a bounty of pumpkin, maize and apple-red leaves. Combined with views of smooth-as-glass Buck and Devil lakes tucked amid evergreen pines, the route delivers a stunning portrait of the season.

Every season heralds a new show of beauty in this pastoral slice of Quebec. The scenic portion of PR 117 begins along the banks of Riviire du Nord then travels to the pasturelands around Mont-Tremblant. Fall is a particularly lovely time to see it when deep shades of orange and gold color the mountainsides. The route becomes more heavily forested as it heads north.
