109.5 miles: 1 hours, 35 minutes
Along I-88 in New York, the western foothills of the Catskill Mountains create long, sloping grades perfect for pastures and farmlands. Cows, silos and farmhouses complete the rural landscape along this intrastate highway. With its tree-lined streets and pleasant downtown shops, the city of Oneonta, set snugly between the hills, seems to hark back to simpler times.

This pleasant drive through eastern New York passes through many charming towns, including Oneonta, whose name is thought to mean “place of open rocks” in the Mohawk language, and Cobleskill, home to SUNY Cobleskill. Several state forests border the Catskills Foothills Scenic Highway, and lush farmland and majestic tree-covered mountains make I-88 one of the state’s most scenic roads.
