39.8 miles: 35 minutes
Fronted by white pine, lovely Chautauqua Lake’s northeast shore is visible as you begin this trek through Western New York on I-86. Just before crossing over the Allegheny River, you’ll enter Indian reservation lands. On the approach to Salamanca, the Southern Tier Expressway edges Allegany State Park, and dense oak and hardwood forests go on as far as the eye can see.
