Seasonal route: The road is subject to closure in winter. Extreme weather conditions, steep grades, sharp curves and a lack of guardrails make every mile an adventure on the road to the Northeast’s highest peak. On clear days frequent turnouts reward brave drivers and passengers with awe-inspiring views; there’s nothing quite like the panorama from Mount Washington's 6,288-foot summit.

Climbing 4,600 feet up Mount Washington’s eastern side, this famous byway offers a driving experience that’s not for the fainthearted. The narrow, winding road has an average grade of 12 percent and, halfway up, turns to gravel for a mile. The weather at the cold, rocky peak changes constantly; wind gusts and dramatic cloud formations are common.
