SR 2 parallels railroad tracks that cut through the wide-open spaces of grassy prairie lands dotted with scrub brush and farms, many of which have towering cornfields that border the highway. The grassy sandhills for which this byway is named make up much of the background, and May through June, you might see blowout penstemon bloom purple flowers on the dunes.

The dunes, frequently inhospitable to human enterprise, support a vibrant wildlife population. In the center of the route, the byway skirts the Nebraska National Forest, one of the largest hand-planted forests in the world, and in Antioch stands the ghostly walls of the World War I-era Potash Ruins.
