Pacific Northwest Road Trips

Spanning the entire Oregon coastline, jagged cliffs, lighthouses, pine forests, Victorian homes and charming cities line the Pacific Coast Scenic Byway. Natural beauty dominates your view along the shore with steep cliffs and rocky outcroppings often visible as US 101 skirts near the ocean.

Washington SR 129 becomes SR 3 in Oregon where it continues a twisting course among steep, eroded hillsides. The scrubby and virtually treeless landscape flattens out and enters stands of ponderosa pine as it approaches Wallowa-Whitman National Forest. Eventually the trees recede again and the Wallowa Mountains appear on the southern horizon as the road nears Enterprise.

Following FR 53 southeast from Heppner, the Blue Mountain Scenic Highway follows Willow Creek up into Oregon's Umatilla National Forest. The byway exits the forest's Heppner District and descends to the town of Ukiah before continuing via FR 52 back into the national forest and the North Fork John Day Wilderness. Due to snow, portions are closed mid-November to late May.
