As scenic drives go, this one definitely does not disappoint. Hugging the Monterey Peninsula coast as it traverses the gated community of Pebble Beach, 17-Mile Drive - in addition to providing glimpses of some famous, seriously challenging golf courses - offers a bevy of panoramic water views, as well as plenty of spots to pull off the road and enjoy them.

The route can be driven in half an hour, but take time to stop at signed points of interest. Early seafarers crashed into the rocks at Point Joe, thinking it was the entrance to Monterey Bay. Bird Rock is a favorite gathering spot for gulls and other seabirds. And the Lone Cypress, estimated to be more than 250 years old, is a coastal California icon.
