The badlands of southeastern California's Anza-Borrego Desert State Park are the dictionary definition of “austere.” There's a strangely beautiful, post-apocalyptic feel to the desolate landscape. Wildflowers provide bursts of color from late February through March; it's the best time of year to drive this route, as summer temperatures soar well over 100 degrees.

CR S22, the Borrego Salton Seaway, branches west off SR 86 at Salton City and heads into the heart of the Borrego Badlands, with the rugged Santa Rosa Mountains providing an impressive backdrop. If you have a 4WD vehicle, take the sandy, rutted turnoff road that leads to Font's Point; the vast vista of ridges, hills and arroyos is breathtaking, especially at sunset.
