Seasonal route: The road is subject to closure in winter. The Sonora Pass Highway - SR 108 between Sonora and US 395 - crosses the Sierras through Stanislaus National Forest’s aspen and pine woods. At 9,624 feet, Sonora Pass is one of California’s highest mountain passes. This two-lane asphalt road, a beautiful mountain drive, is normally closed from early November to mid-May.
From Sonora, SR 108 winds across the Sierras against a backdrop of rocky cliffs, giant boulders, and vast forests of pine and aspen. It winds sharply over 9,624-foot Sonora Pass, but from the vantage point of Vista Point the views of the rocky peaks that make up the Carson-Iceberg Wilderness are worth the effort.
