During this drive on two-lane SR 54, Guadalupe Peak rises like a giant amethyst ship from the dusty sea of the prairie on this northern section of the Texas Mountain Trail. Take photos at sunset to capture the rich hues of the sun playing off the mountain’s rocky outcroppings. Listen to the wind rush across the land while soft swirls of dust dance over scrub-dotted plains.

Ride past Texas ranchlands, where deer and cattle graze on grass and scrub brush. Bitter Well Mountain and the Black Mountains create ridges on either side. Pass the Sierra Diablo Wildlife Management Area, home to bighorn sheep. See swirling white salt basin dunes in the north near Guadalupe Mountains National Park. There are no gas stations on the route, so fuel up in Van Horn.
