36.4 miles: 35 minutes
Get an up-close look at the “sea of grass” while traversing Big Cypress National Preserve on US 41. Experience the primeval beauty of diverse habitats—marshlands, dry prairies, islands of palmettos, stands of pine and hardwoods, and dense mangrove forests propped up on stilt-like roots. Eagles and hawks swoop overhead while alligators lurk around cypress knees.

The 2,400-square-mile Big Cypress National Preserve, part of Big Cypress Swamp, is a delicate ecological habitat and wildlife refuge. Connect with nature in the unspoiled environment on a trail walk or airboat ride just off of US 41. Keep a keen eye on the water’s surface for a peek at alligators or turtles. Watch for egrets and herons wading through the marshlands.
