36.4 miles: 35 minutes
Get an up-close look at the "sea of grass" while traversing Big Cypress National Preserve on US 41. Experience the primeval beauty of diverse habitats - marshlands, dry prairies, islands of palmettos, stands of pine and hardwoods, and dense mangrove forests propped up on stilt-like roots. Eagles and hawks swoop overhead while alligators lurk around cypress knees.

The 2,400-square-mile Big Cypress National Preserve, part of Big Cypress Swamp, is a delicate ecological habitat and wildlife refuge. Connect with nature in the unspoiled environment on a trail walk or airboat ride just off of US 41. Keep a keen eye on the water’s surface for a peek at alligators or turtles. Watch for egrets and herons wading through the marshlands.
