The gleaming white landscape showcased by Dunes Scenic Drive isn’t snow but is a field of sand dunes made up of gypsum crystals. Though the drive itself should be relatively short, there are plenty of recreational opportunities to keep one occupied in White Sands National Park, such as picnics, walks (including the ranger-led ones) and, of course, photography.

Rare gypsum crystals sparkle like snow in White Sands National Park. For the best view of these rare formations (the world’s largest), visitors should take a short drive around the loop. Best bets include scenic photography, educational lectures and ranger-led walks—particularly during sunset or the full moon—with advance reservations.
