The Trail of the Mountain Spirits Scenic Byway follows the path of the Mimbres River and continues northwest through the wide valley, past range land, canyons, cliffs and forested mountains. The byway ends at the southern edge of the Gila Wilderness, once home to the cliff-dwelling Mimbres people. Wildlife in the forest includes bobcats, cougars, deer, black bears and the Mexican wolf.
