Ansted, originally settled by Baptists in 1790, was named New Haven by a group of New England Spiritualists who came to the town in 1830. The following year it was renamed after British scientist David T. Ansted, who had interested English investors in building coal-mining operations. On a knoll overlooking the town, Westlake Cemetery contains the grave of Julia Jackson Woodson, Gen. Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson's mother. Learn More...
