The abundant minerals and semiprecious stones found in Bancroft make the town internationally renowned among mineralogists and rockhounds. The area yields examples of 80 percent of Canada's minerals, including nepheline-bearing rocks and minerals containing the radioactive elements uranium and thorium. The town's most impressive resource is blue sodalite, found almost exclusively in Bancroft. The chamber of commerce sponsors the Bancroft Mineral Museum, housed in the former Bancroft railway station. Constructed to resemble the inside of a mine, the museum features a display of more than 350 locally collected mineral specimens; phone (613) 332-1513. Learn More...
