Serving as landmarks for Winnebago Indians and lead miners following the ore veins from Galena, Ill., two blue hills, the highest in southern Wisconsin, attracted Ebenezer Brigham in 1828. Using nothing more than a windlass, rope and tub, Brigham extracted more than 4 million pounds of lead from the ground.
