Calhoun and surrounding Gordon County were the home of the Cherokee Native Americans until 1838, when the Cherokees were forced to sell their land and move to Oklahoma. Local industry includes carpet and textile manufacturing. Resaca Confederate Cemetery, 5 miles north on I-75, was the site of the Civil War battle that opened the way to Atlanta for Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman. Nearby at Fort Wayne Civil War Historic Site, a 1-mile interpretive trail recounts the battle.
