Settled in 1640, Château-Richer was established as a parish in 1678 by Bishop de Laval, the first bishop of New France. De Laval reportedly named the village after the priory of Château-Richer in France. There also is a legend that one of the town's settlers named Richer established a shelter in a huge tree trunk. The townspeople ridiculed him by calling his habitat Château Richer, a name later assumed by the parish. Learn More...
