The Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway System is a 3,768-kilometre (2,342-mi.) marine highway that extends from the Atlantic Ocean to the western shore of Lake Superior, the headwaters of the Great Lakes, at Duluth, Minn. It was completed in 1959 as a joint venture between the United States and Canada. The United States dredged the Thousand Islands section and constructed the Wiley-Dondero Ship Channel and two locks with auxiliary facilities in the International Rapids section between Massena, N.Y., and Cornwall, Ontario.
