On the Connecticut River, the Pioneer Valley city of Holyoke was the first planned industrial center in the country. Volleyball, first known as mintonette, was invented in 1895 by W.G. Morgan, a physical education instructor at the local YMCA. The Volleyball Hall of Fame, 444 Dwight St., features a model half-court and interactive exhibits.
