In accordance with its name, which is thought to mean heaven, the Marquette iron range city of Ishpeming has become a well-known ski center. Organized skiing began in Ishpeming in 1887, when three Norwegians formed a ski club that eventually grew into a national ski association. Cross-country ski and snowmobile trails abound; brochures are available at the chamber of commerce. Cross-country skis, snowshoes and snowmobiles can be rented in town. Al Quaal Recreation Area at 501 Poplar St. is open weekends and has cross-country ski trails, a small downhill ski area and a tube slide. Learn More...
