Native Americans once gathered in great numbers to fish for salmon at the Kettle Falls cataract on the Columbia River, now beneath the waters of Lake Roosevelt. In 1825, the Hudson's Bay Company established a gristmill at nearby Myers Falls, making this the first European settlement in Washington east of the Cascades.
