Extending from Canada southward for 120 miles, Lake Champlain varies from a quarter of a mile to 12 miles wide. Two-thirds of its area lies in Vermont; the rest, except for a small Canadian portion, is in New York. Lake Champlain—with its Hudson River connector, the Champlain Canal—accommodates large vessels to make navigation possible from New York City to Montréal and the Great Lakes.
