Today an upscale suburb bordering the Willamette River 7 miles south of Portland, Lake Oswego was settled back in 1847. A blast furnace was built in 1866 to take advantage of nearby iron deposits, and promoters hoped to make Oswego (as it was known until 1960) the Pittsburgh of the West.
