The Los Altos area was on the route of a 1775-76 expedition led by Spanish commander Juan Bautista de Anza from Mexico into Alta (Upper) California. The purpose of this overland journey was to establish a Spanish presence, including a presidio and mission, near the Bay of San Francisco.
