In 1850, a merchant tailor named John Stevens founded the Industrial Home Association with the goal of helping working-class New Yorkers buy their own homes. More than 1,000 people joined, and the association collected enough dues to purchase 369 acres of farmland. In a vote to select the town name, Monticello was the original winner.
