On Lake Ontario at the mouth of the Oswego River, Oswego was fought over by the French, English and Americans during most of the 1700s because of its strategic position at the end of the inland water route. By 1796 Oswego was firmly in U.S. hands, and the town soon became a booming port. Oswego is the largest U.S. port on Lake Ontario and the home of the State University of New York at Oswego.
