Occidental, about an hour's drive north of San Francisco, is a mere blip of a town: essentially a two-block main street with a couple of side streets and a sprinkling of homes perched on tree-covered hillsides. It sits at the approximate midpoint of the Bohemian Highway, a 10-mile stretch of winding two-lane road that connects Freestone (at the southern end) and Monte Rio (at the northern end). Snaking past bucolic pastures, around craggy rock formations and through dense woods, the Bohemian Highway—like so many other off-the-beaten-path roadways in this part of California—is a delightfully scenic drive that begs to be taken at a leisurely pace.
