Orange City's early residents were the Timucuan Indians, who lived along the St. Johns River and ate the snails that inhabited the river's sandbars. The mound formed by the accumulation of centuries of snail shells later served as a foundation for the area's first permanent home, the 1872 Thursby House. Today the residence is preserved in Blue Spring State Park, a winter habitat of the endangered manatee. Learn More...
