White Salmon's location, atop a bench 500 feet above the Columbia River, affords panoramic views across the water to the Hood River Valley, with majestic Mount Hood as a backdrop. A glockenspiel—one of the few in the western United States—is a nod to the German heritage of many of the area's early settlers. The clock tower is part of City Hall, at the corner of Main Avenue and Jewett Boulevard. The White Salmon River empties into the Columbia several miles to the west; multitudes of pale-hued, spawned-out salmon, formerly quite abundant but less so now, once gave the waterway a whitish color in the fall.
