About AftonEmigrants from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints surveyed the already-settled site of Afton in 1896, using a carpenter's square, a rope and an almanac and taking their bearings from the North Star and the sun. An official survey made years later found the plot only about 5 feet off.
In addition to the arch of 3,011 elk antlers that spans Washington Street at the center of town, Afton is noted for Periodic Spring, a natural cold-water geyser. The spring is 5 miles east in Bridger-Teton National Forest.
Afton lies in Star Valley along the scenic portion of US 89, which runs 255 miles between Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park and Geneva on the Idaho border.
