Tucked into the Moreno Valley and surrounded by the imposing Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Angel Fire gained its name from two different natural phenomena—bright afternoon sunlight reflecting off alpine peaks, and (according to 19th-century mountain man and Indian fighter Kit Carson) early morning winter sunlight glinting on ice-covered tree branches.
